Mike McCurley

Mike McCurleyMike McCurley provides personal, executive, drug and alcohol, and marital enhancement coaching to clients looking to improve their lives through a rigorous process of self-examination, goal-setting, and accountability.

In addition to 15 years of coaching experience, Mike has spent 35 years as one of the nation’s top divorce lawyers. His family law work not only prompted him to explore the benefits of coaching for his divorce clients, but also provided him with a wealth of insight into change motivation and the power we all have—but rarely exercise—to radically transform our own lives.

Mike is a Certified Professional Coach, having completed training at the College of Executive Coaching, an International Coaching Federation-accredited institution. He is a highly sought-after lecturer and has authored a number of papers and publications, including “Low-End and High-End Use of Witness Trainers, Consultants, and Life-Coaches,” for the 2005 State Bar of Texas’ Advanced Family Law Course, and “Divorce: Prevention, Survival & Recovery,” at Canyon Ranch, the renowned wellness resort and spa in Tucson, Arizona.

After years of guiding his clients through the divorce process, Mike realized that many marriages—and families—could be saved if his clients lived more examined, fulfilled lives.

“The roots of divorce are very often in personal unhappiness,” he says. “When a person sees that they aren’t living up to their potential, either professionally or personally, they often begin to transfer that unhappiness onto their spouse. From there, you see the kinds of toxins that can destroy a family, such as infidelity, physical abuse, substance abuse – you name it.”

His decision to enter coaching grew out of his longtime personal and professional relationship with Dr. Dan Baker, author of the bestsellers “What Happy People Know” and “What Happy Companies Know” and formerly the Director of Life Enhancement at Canyon Ranch.

Through coaching, Mike has been able to help others live up to their potential, both personally and professionally. Undoubtedly, this has deprived him of at least a handful of divorce cases, but he says that’s a tradeoff he can live with.

Mike and his wife Mary Johanna McCurley, who is also a coach, are partners in the law firm of VernerBrumleyMcCurley. They live in Dallas.
